Learning You To Drive Is Our Goal

Instructor Training

Become a Driving Instructor

If you like meeting new people, communicate easily, enjoy driving and like to help others, driving instruction has a lot to offer.

- Working as an instructor is the perfect job for men and women who want their job to be flexible, and work hours to suit themselves. Choosing to work part time, full time or as additional income is great when you pick and choose you're own working week and vary it to suit yourself.

- Get the satisfaction of teaching pupils in your every day work, everything they need to know to become a safe driver, teaching the rules of the Highway Code and the basics from the first time they move the car, to driving independently in traffic. Then of course, you can also enjoy the excitement when they pass the driving test and feel that you have done something rewarding each day.

- Financially driving instructors can earn as little or as much as they like by conducting as many lessons as they choose each week. Your income will match you're effort!

- We are now in a society dominated by the car and people feel it is a necessary life skill to be able to drive. Where people want a secure occupation driving instruction can offer it. Learners require a lot more preparation to pass much more demanding theory and practical tests, so now require more training than ever before.

Legal requirements/Driving Standards Agency requirements

In order to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and have your name entered in to the DSA's Register there are certain legal requirements you need to meet.

- You must have held a full UK driving licence for four years, ideally without endorsements (up to 4 penalty points are unlikely to affect your application).

- You must not have any non-motoring convictions (unless spent).

- You must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 90 ft (27.5 metres) wearing your glasses if usually worn.

- You must pass a 3 part qualifying examination, (candidates are allowed a period of up to 2 years to do this). An explanation of the three parts are listed below: -

Part 1

The first part is a theory test of one hundred multiple-choice questions. The questions are much more varied than the learner theory test. You will also have to pass a computer based hazard perception test.

Part 2

The second part is to demonstrate your ability to drive to a high standard for approximately one hour. The test is preceded with the eye sight test. When in car you will be expected to drive in a brisk, business-like manner over varied routes in and out of built up areas. Candidates are also asked to perform some set manoeuvres as part of the test.

Part 3

Part 3 is a test of your instructional ability and lasts for one hour. The examiner will role-play 2 learner drivers, you will be assessed on your ability to instruct the pupil; your ability to correct mistakes and your general manner.
